GRIFFINTOWN

Griffintown Neighborhood

Griffintown is a new and upcoming, hip neighborhood. There’s a bevy of condos from new constructions to some older ones like some of the Lowneys. The neighborhood reminds me a bit of Soho in New York, where many artisan shops, bakeries and restaurants are creating a vibe. This quartier is very popular with young professionals who work in the downtown core and enjoy the ability to walk to work.  Check out some of the many articles I share here that will provide you with varied viewpoints and highlights of this special neighborhood.

Located in the southwest of Montreal, the district of Griffintown has undergone a significant transformation over the years, evolving from an industrial hub in the 19th century to one of Montreal’s most vibrant and sought-after neighborhoods in the 21st century. Its rich history, combined with its modern urban vibes, makes Griffintown a must-visit for both residents and tourists alike.

Historical Background: Griffintown was originally an industrial district, characterized by factories, warehouses, and workers’ row houses. By the late 20th century, with the decline of industry, the neighborhood faced a period of neglect. However, the early 21st century brought a wave of revitalization, turning Griffintown into a dynamic residential and commercial zone.

Shops and Boutiques: A stroll through Griffintown reveals a myriad of independent boutiques and art galleries. Here, both old-world charm and modern elegance blend effortlessly.

  1. Boutique UNIC – Offering high-quality and sustainable fashion, this boutique emphasizes local designers and environmentally-friendly choices.
  2. Le Cartel Clothing Co. – A store focusing on streetwear, offering a mix of in-house designs and well-known brands.

Restaurants and Cafés: From traditional Quebecois cuisine to international delicacies, Griffintown’s culinary scene is diverse and delightful.

Le Richmond – An Italian market and restaurant housed in a 19th-century building. Its lavish brunches are particularly popular.

Bird Bar – This establishment focuses on gourmet fried chicken and champagne, offering a quirky yet sophisticated dining experience.

Café Aunja – A cozy and atmospheric café, perfect for sipping tea or coffee and enjoying Persian snacks.

Real Estate: Over the years, Griffintown has become an attractive real estate hotspot. The transformation has seen the rise of modern condos and luxury apartments that offer stunning views of the Lachine Canal and the Montreal skyline. Many old industrial buildings have been repurposed into trendy lofts, preserving Griffintown’s historical charm while catering to modern urban living. Property values have been on the rise, making it an excellent investment opportunity.
